Dallas Arboretum - Dallas, Texas
Dallas Arboretum - Dallas, Texas
The Arboretum consists of 66 acres of floral splendor where there is a peaceful counterbalance to the hectic life of the city. There are also two historical mansions on the grounds; the DeGolyer House and the Camp Estate, which were built in 1939 and feature 17th and 18th century art and furniture. These mansions overlook White Rock Lake.
There are a number of different gardens for you to enjoy. There is the Martha Brooks Camellia Garden with its space of wintertime color with more than 200 exquisite camellias of 30 different cultivars. Then the Pecan grove which is filled with large pecan trees and a great place to picnic. At the end of Crape Myrtle Alle is the Toad Corners where you will find a quartet of giant bronze toads spouting 20 foot streams of water, a great play area for children, especially in the summertime.
Dallas Aquarium - Dallas, Texas
The wonderful Dallas Aquarium at Fair Park first opened its doors in 1936 in a fabulous Art Deco building. There are thousands of aquatic animals, including marine and freshwater fish, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Your adventure in the world of the Dallas Aquarium will give you an opportunity to see the wide array of species that make up our oceans and rivers and lakes.
One of the things that the Aquarium encourages visitors to see is the Seahorse Rodeo where nine seahorse species large (pot bellies (and small (dwarf) spend the day entwined with their tank mates. Did you know that the male Seahorse gives birth to babies from their pouches? There are also "relatives" of the seahorse on display including the monogamous blue stripe pipefish, paper think shrimpfish and jumping alligator pipefish.
Crow Collection of Asian Art - Dallas, Texas
While on your Texas vacation you may want to take a break and stop in at the Crow Collection of Asian Art display. Here you will have the opportunity to see over 600 paintings, other art mediums such as metal and stone and there are large architectural pieces from the countries of China, Japan, India, and Southeast Asia. There are also more than 300 works on display in the galleries such as precious jade ornaments, delicate Japanese scrolls and a rare sandstone facade of an 18th century Indian residence.
Cotton Bowl (stadium) - Dallas, Texas
This facility was built in 1932 and is the home of the annual Cotton Bowl Classic college football bowl game. The game will be moving to Arlington, Texas, and the Dallas Cowboys New Stadium on New Year’s Day 2010.
The Cotton Bowl now seats 92,100 people, nearly twice what it did when it was first constructed. The city of Dallas invested $57 million in renovating the old stadium to make it a benefit to the city.
Bryan Cabin - Dallas, Texas
This is the reconstruction of the first resident of the area, John Neely Byran. The cabin is located in the historic district of downtown Dallas. Standing alone in this site, surrounded by the busy city of Dallas, the cabin shows how the founder of the area lived in a one room home alone on the prairie.
The original cabin was mostly destroyed by flooding in the late 1800’s. The replica stands just about a quarter of a mile from the original site of the founders home.
American Airlines Center - Dallas, Texas
This building of brick, limestone and granite accented with the signature arches are the welcoming sign of the city to its citizens. There are tour entrances to the building, one on each side of the building with the north and south ends of the building showcasing their dramatic outdoor balconies at the Platinum Level where you can get a spectacular view of downtown.
This facility is the home to the Desperados, Mavericks, and Stars and there are other concerts held here. The Mavericks are an NBA team who came to Dallas in 1980. The Desperados are members of the Arena Football League. Tickets to these events are at a price that everyone can afford at just $12 for the terrace level. The Stars moved to Dallas from Minnesota and are one of the top National Hockey League teams offering fabulous hockey for everyone.
Toothpick King Sculptures - Waxahachie, Texas. Building things with toothpicks takes the patience that few people are able to put into play. In Waxahachie there is a man that has that type of patience and has created a number of mechanical sculptures using, you guessed it, toothpicks! There are thousands and thousands of toothpicks all glued together to create the sculptures such as the 8,650 flat, 100 square, 250 round toothpicks along with the 140 chopsticks that went into the creation of the Ferris Wheel that is on display.
