O. Henry Museum - Austin, Texas

Almost everyone has heard of the author O. Henry, but did you know that his name was truly William Sidney Porter?  He was knows as the master of the short story.  He resided in the museum (which was his house) which is an 1886 Queen Anne-style cottage from the years 1893 - 1895.  The home has been restored and now contains artifacts and memorabilia from Porter’s life in Austin.  It is on the National Register Property and National Literary Landmark of the City of Austin.

Neill-Cochran House Museum - Austin, Texas

Built in 1855 this house demonstrates the Greek Revival style with it’s Classic Doric columns.  The house was built by Abner Cook for Washington Hill.  Cook was the builder of the Texas Governor’s Mansion as well as other stately homes in the Austin area. 

With the cost of the residence being higher than Hill anticipated he had to sell three slaves and borrowed money to finish the house.  He never got the opportunity to live in the house and sold it to investors who leased it to the Texas Asylum for the Blind to use until their school and dorm were completed.  Then the house was leased to Lt. Governor Fletcher Stockade.

Right here in Austin is this 42-acre site with numerous research display gardens, landscaped areas and themed gardens that were established by Lady Bird Johnson and actress Helen Hays in 1982.  The purpose is to introduce people to the beauty and diversity of wildflowers and other native plants.  It is now part of the University of Texas Austin.

Governor’s Mansion - Austin, Texas

The Governor’s Mansion was built in 1856 with dignified white columns welcoming all that come to it.  The governor occupies a private second-floor apartment.  The other rooms of the Mansion may be seen on public tours, reservations are required on day in advance.  Beginning in October of 2007 the mansion was closed for tours indefinitely for extensive deferred maintenance.  A building as old as the mansion requires constant and extensive maintenance to keep it in pristine condition as the Governor deserves, as well as the citizens of Texas.
